SHIFT Executive Roundtables: HR Leadership Insights in Rapidly Evolving Times

Last week our SHIFT Forward Executive Roundtable brought together top HR and DEI executives and inhouse employment counsel at a critical moment of change in our industry. After months of screen-based interactions, the power of peer-to-peer connections was immediately evident as introductions evolved into deep, candid conversations about the challenges and opportunities that lie ahead.

Why We Created the Roundtables

The SHIFT Forward Executive Roundtable was born from our commitment to keep our fingers on the pulse of what our clients and partners are experiencing. In a landscape that’s changing almost daily, we recognized the need for a forum where HR leaders could exchange insights, share strategies, and collectively navigate uncertainty. Our goal is simple: to better understand your challenges so we can better serve your needs.

During the session, we shared updates on the latest Executive Orders affecting workplace policies, recent EEOC guidance, and significant legal decisions impacting DEI initiatives nationwide. These updates provided context for our discussions and a foundation for the strategies being developed across organizations.

Taking the Temperature: The State of HR and Workplace Culture Today

The candid discussions revealed a complex reality for HR professionals working in diversity and inclusion:

  • Words Matter More Than Ever: The terminology around diversity, equity, and inclusion work is being carefully considered, with many organizations shifting emphasis while maintaining commitment to core principles.
  • Communication Is Paramount: The participants emphasized the critical importance of clear communication with employees about continued commitment to inclusive workplaces, even as approaches evolve.
  • Legal Guidance Is Essential: Everyone agreed that incorporating legal expertise into DEI strategy has become a non-negotiable component of program development.
  • Leadership Support Remains Critical: Without visible, consistent support from leadership, even the most thoughtfully designed initiatives will struggle to create lasting change.
  • Focus on Behavior: Many of the leaders shared that they are finding success by emphasizing inclusive behaviors rather than abstract concepts. Teaching concrete actions is having a greater impact on building better workplace cultures.
  • Training as a Navigation Tool: Participants highlighted how crucial effective training programs are in helping employees navigate today’s challenging landscape, providing them with tools to foster inclusion despite external pressures.

Throughout these discussions, a theme emerged: this work continues to matter deeply, even as—and perhaps especially because—external pressures and contexts shift.

Creating Safe Spaces Elevates Everyone

What was most striking about our gathering wasn’t just the content of the conversations but their quality. In creating a safe space where leaders could speak openly about their challenges, uncertainties, and successes, we collectively elevated our thinking.

The parallel to these leaders’ own work was unmistakable—they’re striving daily to create similarly safe environments within their organizations. Just as our roundtable demonstrated how psychological safety unlocks authentic exchange, these HR professionals are working to establish cultures where employees can bring their whole selves to work, voice concerns without fear, and collaborate across differences.

This is the model that works: bringing together diverse perspectives, fostering genuine connection, and focusing on solutions rather than simply cataloging problems. The energy in the room wasn’t resigned or defeated—it was hopeful, determined, and surprisingly positive given the challenging atmosphere many described.

Looking Forward

What’s next? We’re excited by the success of these roundtables and will be continuing to build on these efforts to create a SHIFT community of HR, DEI. and employment counsel leaders committed to navigating complexity with clarity and purpose. As one participant noted, the power of connection fuels our best work and strongest partnerships.

In a professional landscape that can sometimes feel isolating, especially for those leading challenging organizational changes, this solution-focused community offers something essential: the knowledge that you’re not alone in this work.

More SHIFT roundtables to come. Contact us if you’d like to participate in a future event. We hope you’ll join us at the table.
