While nearly three quarters of employees say they use AI at work, only about one third have received any formal training on how to use it safely or responsibly. Once harm has occurred, compliance processes activate. At that point, organizations are responding rather than preventing. Costs increase. Trust is harder to rebuild. Reputational risk grows.

In organizations with strong cultures, employees feel safe asking how decisions are made. Leaders are willing to pause automation when something feels off. Accountability remains human, even when tools are involved.

Emerging AI regulations focus on transparency, bias mitigation, and data protection. These are essential steps. But compliance alone cannot address how AI is experienced inside an organization. 

Employees want to know: 

  • When AI is influencing decisions about them 
  • Who is accountable for those decisions 
  • How to raise concerns or challenge outcomes 

Policies may exist, but leader behavior determines whether those policies are trusted. Training may be completed, but culture determines whether people speak up. 

AI risk lives in the gap between what is technically compliant and what feels fair, explainable, and accountable.

AI systems evolve constantly. Risk management cannot be a one-time effort. 

Organizations should regularly revisit: 

  • How AI tools are used in decision-making 
    This includes identifying where AI influences outcomes that affect people, clarifying when human judgment is expected to override automation, and ensuring leaders understand the limits of the tools they rely on. 
  • Whether employees understand and trust those systems 
    Trust depends on transparency. Employees should know when AI is involved, what data is being used, and how decisions can be questioned or reviewed without fear of retaliation. 
  • How leaders respond to questions and concerns 
    Leader reactions send a powerful signal. When questions are welcomed and explored rather than dismissed, employees are far more likely to raise issues early, before risk escalates. 

Ongoing training, leadership reinforcement, and open communication keep AI risk visible rather than hidden. When organizations invest in judgment, accountability, and psychological safety, they are better positioned to adapt as AI and its risks continue to evolve.
