Celebrating Independence Day: Reflecting on Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion

SHIFT News & Articles

In 1776, with the approval of the Continental Congress, America was voted to become an independent nation after becoming tired of being ruled by Great Britain. The Declaration of Independence was written with the goals “to rally the troops, win foreign allies, and to announce the creation of a new country.” Since 1776, we have celebrated this historic event of individual freedom. However, many people in our nation today still do not feel freedom in contexts.

The principles of freedom and equality lie at the core of Independence Day celebrations. However, it is essential to acknowledge that the journey toward achieving true equality and equity for all is ongoing. By leveraging the spirit of the Fourth of July, we can renew our commitment to combating discrimination, bias, and systemic barriers that hinder equal opportunities for marginalized communities. By embracing DEI principles in all aspects of life, we can foster an inclusive society where everyone has a fair chance to thrive.

The Fourth of July is a time for communities to come together, transcending differences and forging connections. Embracing DEI means creating spaces that foster dialogue, understanding, and empathy. It is an invitation to engage in open conversations that promote inclusivity and challenge stereotypes. By actively seeking out diverse perspectives and engaging in constructive conversations, we can build bridges of understanding and work toward a society that values and respects the inherent worth of every individual.

As we celebrate Independence Day, let us remember that diversity, equity, and inclusion are not mere buzzwords but vital pillars of a society striving for progress and unity. By embracing the principles of DEI, we can ensure that the promise of freedom and equality enshrined in the Fourth of July extends to all individuals, regardless of their background. Let this be a day of reflection, renewal, and commitment to creating a more inclusive future where every person’s voice is heard, valued, and uplifted. Happy Fourth of July!
